New Chapter: How to be a Travelling Artist

Sometimes life is about feeling sick to your stomach, like all your intestines have collapsed into a pile at the bottom of your belly. Sometimes your heart pumps gallons of blood up into your brain and you feel dizzy - but in the blink of an eye the sick and blood turns into butterflies. And those butterflies become big, brave birds that lift you up off the ground. In a matter of milliseconds you feel like you're on top of the world and THAT becomes what life is all about. Life is just a rollercoaster of feelings.

That's what it often feels like to be an artist. At the moment, that's very much what it feels like to be me.

But enough of the drama, let's cut to the chase.

I have cut my art supplies down to a carry-on backpack which I'm taking on a journey.

After 3 years of being in one place and having plenty of time and space to create my artwork, I'm giving it all up to make art in hostel bunk beds and on tiny coffee shop tables - and I am over the moon about it!

I'm fulfilling my dream of becoming a travelling artist, hopefully at least for one year. I'l be creating artwork while finding inspiration in the places I travel to.

In all honesty, I do find myself thinking "What the hell are you doing, Silja, you're throwing all that hard work away, for what!?". What am I going to do when I have limited room to work? When the lighting is bad? Will people stare at me? Can I take everything I need with me? I feel like there's a good chance that this will drastically change things and not necessarily for the better.

But regardless of that, it might also open up new opportunities, right?

This fluctuation between awful anxiety and endless excitement is truly what life is all about.

That's why I'm willing to take on this challenge, even if it scares the shit out of me.

This is going to be a huge lesson for me and it might teach you a thing or two, too!

I plan to document my experience and share it with you. If you've ever thought about travelling and creating artwork but are unsure if it'll work or where to start, I hope you follow me on this journey.

Topics I will include are:

- What art materials I carry with me.

- How I create art in different locations.

- How I feel along the way, can I handle this lifestyle?

- Where I'm finding inspiration.

- Art scenes in various locations (galleries, shops etc.).

See you at the other end...
